Mango – Properties and medicinal uses

Mango is a fruit that is abundantly distributed in many parts of the world. Its tree, has an average height of 20m and can produce more than 25,000 fruits a year.



Mango contains about 81.7% water, 15.2g of carbohydrates per 100g of edible portion which mostly consists of sugars {glucose, fructose, and saccharose}. The nutrients contained in mango are:

* Provitamin A – Mango is the fresh fruit with the greatest vitamin A content.

* Vitamin C- Mango contains 27.7mg/100g which indicates its rich-fullness in vitamin C.
Research has shown that “A medium sized mango(300g) provides nearly 138% of an adult daily requirement of vitamin C.
* Vitamin E- Mango is also classified as one of the richest fresh fruit in vitamin E,as a 300g mango provides 33% of the daily requirement for this vitamin for an adult.
* Other vitamins- Mango also contain significant amounts of vitamin B1,B2,B6 and also niacin
* Minerals – Mango contains potassium,which is the most abundant amongst other minerals within it,other minerals in smaller amounts are magnesium and Iron.
* Mango also contains pectin (soluble fiber), organic acids and tannins.

Medicinal uses of Mango

* Skin conditions
Research has shown and proven that “vitamin A deficiency produces skin dryness and scaling”. Mango contains a lot of vitamin A, thus, eating mango helps maintain a healthy skin. Also, eating abundant mangoes is recommended in cases of skin problems such as eczema, skin dryness, dermatosis (skin degeneration) and Prevention of premature skin aging.

* Arteriosclerosis
Mangoes are very rich in vitamin A, C and E,these are the three most powerful antioxidant vitamins.They prevent the oxidation of cholesterol bearing lipoproteins that circulate in the blood stream, this oxidation causes the deposition of cholesterol on the arterial walls, leading to their deterioration.

* Hypertension
Mangoes increases urine production{diuretic}. They are highly recommended in cases of high blood pressure since they help in controlling it,this property of action is due to their richness in Potassium and very low in Sodium {which aggravates hypertension}.

* Diabetes
Mangoes are well tolerated by diabetics. It has been shown that after eating mangoes, the blood glucose level of non-insulin dependent diabetics gets lower. Also, Mango helps in preventing the circulatory complications associated with diabetes.

* Retinal conditions
Mango is also recommended when there is vision loss due to retinal conditions like thrombosis in the central retinal artery and night blindness,this action, is due to the presence of vitamin A, whose action is potentiated by vitamin C and E.
