Both of these diseases consists of the softening and de-formation of the bones caused by insufficient mineralization (lack of sufficient minerals, mainly calcium, others include: phosphorus and magnesium).
Rickets is associated with childhood, while osteomalacia is found in adults.
The main cause of rickets and osteomalacia is the deficiency of Vitamin D, due to lack of exposure to sun or of insufficient consumption in diets. VITAMIN D helps in the calcification and hardening of bones.
In both cases, vitamin D and calcium are essential in order to prevent /treat this disease. other minerals include; phosphorus, magnesium and trace elements (boron and fluorine) are also necessary.
